nudes inside a nude with a message
When looking at this sculpture from a distance, one may be forgiven for thinking that Environmental Graffiti had gone down the route of becoming a soft porn site. On closer inspection however, you’d notice that the breasts above were painstakingly created using 32,000 Barbie dolls by photographer Chris Jordan. Why? Because that’s the number of females in the US who have cosmetic surgery to enlarge their breasts every month.
The picture is oddly beautiful, mind-boggling and poignant. It poses such questions as: to whom did the Barbies belong to? Why were they thrown away? What is the story behind them? The poignancy about the piece perhaps lies in the fact that the sculpture creates a sense of lost innocence; a symbol of our fake throwaway society – one which is plastic and lies in entropy.[From These Breasts Have a Message For Us! | Environmental Graffiti ]
Chris Jordan has created a number of interesting, repetitive recycled found object photographs. his work is a not so gentle reminder of the consumerism and waste pervading our culture. Personally I find it interesting that the blogs I have found writing about this are very defensive about showing the works. as though there is something wrong with art that shows a delicate and subtle image of a woman’s breasts. or at least something wrong with being associated with it. however, not one seems to object that the barbies themselves are nude, interesting..

Because God created it the human body can remain nude and uncovered and preserve its splendour and its beauty.
Adding realism to your nude models
Now that you have the basic models you may have noticed they look a little.. blah. the skin looks plastic and fake, the figures are basic and not very expressive in themselves, you need to inject a little reality. while photorealism isn’t completely necessary for a figure reference, I find it helps to create the best reference possible. here are some basic things you can use to make your model more realistic.
Textures. textures are what bring the models to life. the same basic female model can look thousands of different ways just by adding different textures. the word texture is a bit of a misnomer – it’s the skin or fabric you place over your model so that it looks right. Bump maps are what cause actual texture, the pores in the skin, raised moles and so on. they often come with characters. textures are of no use whatsoever without the models but are incredibly powerful in themselves.

Characters: characters are the only thing that sometimes need a purchased component. they are a usually bundle of face and body morphs for your model to create a whole new shape. to apply the morphs you need to have the morph packs installed which unfortunately do cost money (keep an eye for them on sale! – I got a vicky 4 bundle with the morphs and characters for $20!) but are not critical. you can apply character packs without morphs to get the texture and bump benefits and makeup that is often included. there may be some slight figure and face alterations but you wont get the same face and body effects. I often work with Victoria 3 characters without the morphs and have no problems at all. My weakness is for characters, I tend to buy quite a few when they are on sale.

Shaders. Shaders affect how the light reacts with the model. light hits different surfaces and bounces off them in different ways. Metal reacts differently to skin. different metals reflect and bounce light in different ways. different parts of the skin react in different ways. shaders allow you to make those distinctions instead of treating everything like plastic.

Poses. in the most basic meaning, pose files position your model. however in Daz, pose files are also used to affect your model in some way. this may be as simple as posing her or it may be a file that automatically adds the texture or makeup or changes the color. a lot rides on pose files and they exist for automating these processes. this is important to know because of the way the content is sorted. you will find most of your files under poses. luckily now you can sort your content out in the most logical way for you

you can also download free lights, cameras, backgrounds and more. lights are predetermined lighting settings that can enhance your piece. they use color and intensity and sometimes several different sets of lights to create a certain mood or effect. Lighting is such a big part of what makes Daz the perfect medium for life drawing reference that I will cover it in depth later.
MF Husain’s Nude art aquitted

Bharatmata (Mother India) by M.F. Husain
On Monday, three Supreme Court judges described his painting as a work of art and rejected a petition by complainant Dwaipayan Vekateshacharya Varkedkar seeking Husain’s prosecution for offending Hindus.
“It is an art like the sculptures. None get scandalized looking at the sculptures,”
The Times of India quoted the court as saying.
An elated Husain said he would consider returning to India after he has finished his work in Dubai. “It could be this year,” he said.
Akhil Sibal, attorney for Husain, said the Supreme Court’s ruling would serve as a benchmark in three other cases pending against Husain in New Delhi courts accusing him of offending the sentiments of Hind
Finally the proceedings that started with Husain’s elective exile have been put to rest. I think it’s wonderful that the courts have overturned such absurd charges but I wonder what this ruling, and the subsequent cases for which this is now a benchmark, will mean for the undercurrent of dissent about Husain and his work in India. will it actually be safe for his return? we have seen numerous examples of his work being vandalized and riots forming about his paintings all over the world. the reason he fled in the first place was to protect his body and his works from harm. I fear that this court ruling will not actually prevent that.
Here are the posts I’ve written about MF Husain to date. where do we go from here? who knows?

Change of pace
I find that while i don’t particularly want to do the web based portion of my work at the moment. I am more than happy to play with my watercolors. In fact i seem to want to play. Period. I am thoroughly enjoying roaming around, cooking new, fun things and gardening. I guess It’s spring fever.
i am also particularly enjoying my new toy. An lg viewty. It’s a stupid name but probably the best phone i’ve ever had. In fact, i’m writing this on my phone now. I took the photo with it too. I love gadgets! It’s given me the unwired freedom i crave. I just have to stop playing with it so much!
I do think my watercolors are improving. I’m having a lot of fun with them right now. I’m working on some larger ones like this one at the moment, which presents a new challenge.
motivation
I’m finding it hard to get motivated at the moment. after something like a big exhibition a kind of malaise sets in that is pretty hard to push through. luckily this time I wasn’t actually depressed afterwards which was a pleasant change, but I am finding it hard to get back up and into the studio. there are projects around the house that need to be done and I am focussing on those instead of work. I do have another new exhibition coming up soon in Boston, and new paints to try, I have some ideas for pieces and some blog posts to write, online listings to update and exhibitions to apply for but I have to shake myself out of this funk first!

The origins of clothing are not practical. They are mystical and erotic. The primitive man in the wolf-pelt was not keeping dry; he was saying: “Look what I killed. Aren’t I the best?”

Free Nude Models! (and other stuff)
The key to using Daz Studio is the content. Daz makes use of created models, much in the same way poser does, but for free. the main models usually cost money, however you can get a surprising array of free content online. so much in fact that you never need to buy any if you don’t want to!
lets break down the type of content first. for ease of use and explanation I am going to deal specifically with the Daz created models and items created for them. there are other options out there which I will link to later but for now it’s best to work with the same thing. I am not going into clothing in this series of tutorials because I don’t really use it. we are looking at using Daz as an artist’s reference and I think clothes get in the way of that!
Models. models are the 3D figures themselves. they can be humans, animals, fantasy creatures, clothing, hair, props but they are the backbone of what you are going to use to create. in their raw state they are white or have a basic texture applied. to add realism, you need to add texture.

Prudish council rejects nude art
“I unwrapped my work and they looked at it and told me it was inappropriate and they would not hang it in the exhibition,’’ Ms Tuckey, a TAFE art teacher, said.
“They said that school children would be seeing the exhibition. I couldn’t believe anything as simple as a nude drawing of a female adult that is not full
frontal … would not be accepted. It was a rude shock.“I think some of them are ignorant of what art is, this is art and this is an art exhibition. I’d say (to the council) grow up.’’
A nude portrait won an award at the same exhibition last year in which Mr Eames was allowed to enter a nude sculpture of the Greek god Poseidon “rising
from the cliffs with his penis exposed’’.Mr Eames, of Tea Tree Gully, said he was “dumbfounded’’ to be excluded this year. “I said `you’ve got to be joking’ and the organiser said `if you’re both going
to continue to protest, I’ll have to ask you to leave the premises’.“I argued that school children go through tours at galleries like the South Australian Art Gallery and see nudity all the time. The (organisers) said it’s coming
from the Mayor and their hands are tied … They need to get with the times, don’t be a bunch of prudes, this is the real world.’’[From Is it too rude? TTG Council thinks it is - - News | Leader Messenger ]
Another example of a knee jerk reaction following the Henson and Nelson Debacles. The fact that a nude won last year just highlights the sheer hypocrisy at work in the Arts councils at the moment. the works are very nice, classical nudes. there is nothing sexual, indecent or provocative about them. There was a time when the US was considered to be more prudish, more censored and fearful, but this year Australia has really taken the cake. According to the Mayor, who had not actually seen the works in question, these pieces are “extremely graphic” nudes.
Mayor Miriam Smith denied she had ordered staff to reject nude entries.
She said it was a “staff decision’’ but one she supported. “Staff rightly so rejected the pieces based on their graphic nudity,’’ she said. “… it’s not about the pieces of art work, it’s about the environment they were to be displayed it’s not an art gallery it’s a community show where children can come into.’’
While Ms Smith said she was not “personally opposed to nude art … when people go (to the exhibition) they don’t expect to be confronted with extremely graphic nude pieces of art work’’.
[From Is it too rude? TTG Council thinks it is - - News | Leader Messenger ]
There is, however, a happy ending. Russell Starke of Greenhill Galleries was so appalled by this senseless censorship that he snapped up both works for his gallery. within days, the sculpture by artist Scott Eames sold for $1000. He has also received an offer for a solo exhibition at Greenhill galleries next year.
