friday nude quotes

Professor: I’m of the personal opinion that anything counts for art. Take, for example, Nelly’s “Hot in Here.” We have an admonition of certain weather conditions and an entreaty for certain members of a demographic to react within a certain way, and a compliant voice replies, “I am getting so hot, I’m gonna take my clothes off.” This piece of art demonstrates how much easier life would be if getting a woman naked was that easy. And also, it makes me dance, and as we know, hips don’t lie.

new artist statement

Arched - 7x5 oils on canvas
Arched – 7×5 oils on canvas by Jennie Rosenbaum

I’ve been thinking for a while that I should re-do my artist statement. writing lots of submissions has made me think about what my work says and what I want it to say. I also want my statement to be accessible and interesting- not full of art wank.

this is what I have so far – what do you think?

My artwork explores the relationship women have with their bodies. We live in an age of extremes and dichotomies, where women are celebrated for objectifying themselves and others, but nude art is reviled. Where the word curvy is synonymous with the word fat and anorexia and obesity have become the norm. My artwork is unashamedly nude, but not erotic or titillating. I reveal glimpses into my own history and battles with personal issues, but try to make my work something that most people can associate with.

My artwork seeks to capture emotion and to encourage an empathic reaction in the viewers. It considers the different issues women face both internally and through external forces. These works are open for interpretation. Frequently a meaning that I feel in an artwork summons a different gamut of emotions memories and feelings in another viewer. My titles are ambiguous for this reason.

The nude body is a beautiful, sensual, expressive entity. We communicate through so much more than our voices and resonate feelings through body language.

the old statement is on my about page if you want to compare..

t’s only when the tide goes out that you discover who’s been swimming naked.

earliest nude sculpture termed pornography?

venus-hohle-fels-nature.jpg
Side and front views show the six-centimetre, 35,000-year-old ivory carving found in Germany’s Hohle Fels cave. (H. Jensen/University of Tuebingen)

From photography to the internet, a characteristic sign that a new medium is going to succeed is that it is exploited by pornographers. And that, it seems, is not a recent phenomenon. A find reported in this week’s Nature suggests that sculpture, too, brought the smut-makers in early. Nicholas Conrad of the University of Tübingen, in Germany, describes what is probably the oldest human statue yet discovered. It is 6cm tall. It is carved from a mammoth tusk. It dates from about 35,000 years ago. It was found in a cave in south-western Germany. And it is, not to put too fine a point upon the matter, obscene. As 35,000 years ago is reckoned the moment when modern man, Homo sapiens, arrived in Europe, this discovery adds to the evidence that human thinking—or male thinking, at least—has hardly changed since the species evolved.[From Palaeolithic pornography: Unveiled | The Economist]

What a wonderful example of unbiased reporting! lets forget for a moment that this is the oldest human statue found to date. lets forget that its an interesting example of a fertility idol, with evidence that it was worn as an adornment, let’s forget that any insights into early artforms give us so much understanding into where we came from and how art has evolved – no. let’s focus n the fact that she is nude and has big boobs and big thighs. yes, that is the important part of this discovery.

This discovery, termed Venus of Hohle Fels, is fascinating to me, this is from a period where female representation was almost unknown. this figure is tiny – 6 cm long. and very detailed for the size it is. yes, it is a fertility idol, yes it is sexual, as fertility idols are. but why is that ever so much more important than the discovery itself?

for a better article about this discovery and what it means, I recommend Ivory carving may be oldest sculpture of human form

I’ve posed nude for a photographer in the manner of Rodin’s Thinker, but I merely looked constipated.

Who’s side are you on? body painting nude art debate

200905141403.jpg
Painted Models by Grace Tam

In my usual news feeds about nude art I came across these two articles. or rather this article and a rather negative response to it.

Rather than do my usual discussions and debates on the matters at hand I would like to turn them over to you, who do you side with in this issue? the artists or the council? Personally I find the language involved fascinating.. I will wait to voice my own opinion for now.

Flack over body art

Both Baggio and Grace Tam said they were approached during the painting process by a member of the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Arts Council who voiced concern that the nudity could become an issue.

“I was a bit confused,” said Baggio. “Normally with body painting, it’s done completely nude, but we’re covering the bottom already.” Baggio was wearing black bikini bottoms and was topless, but Tam had already finished painting over the entire chest. She and Tam agreed to put flesh-coloured Band-Aids over her nipples, and those were painted over. They both say they thought it became less of a taboo issue now after Baggio’s nipples weren’t exposed.

Baggio was covered in paint by the time the show began, and Tam painted on a second human canvas later in the evening. The second model also covered her nipples and she was wearing tights on her lower half.

There were children both in attendance and performing in the show, but the artists said they received a mature reaction from the young attendees.

“The children couldn’t care less; not one child was making a deal out of it,” recalled fellow performer C.J. Jackman Zigante. “It was one of those things where if the adults didn’t make an issue of it, they didn’t either.”

“They thought it was neat, and their parents were fine with it too, from what I could see,” said Baggio. “They were there for an art show.”

Over artistic differences

The discussion over the boundaries of art and nudity are worthwhile and timely. The arts council presents undraped models in painting classes and we are pleased to do so.

But, just like it is appropriate for all people to be able to judge whether they wish to attend an “R” rated movie with their children, it is appropriate that we inform people in advance whether there will be nude art at what was advertised as a family event. This is allowing families to use their judgment; an important freedom we respect.

Freedom of art is not advanced by trampling on parents rights, but by artists and the public having mutual trust and respect

The members of the board of the arts council are hardworking volunteers. Many of them are artists and they are certainly not prudes. We were happy to have body art tastefully displayed in the lobby, and apologize to those families who have shared their upset that the models then appearing on stage beside their children (without the director of the show’s permission), and to anyone in the audience that also took exception to this.

I look forward to reading your comments. it’s an interesting situation!

The Daily Original

I have been offered representation by another online gallery, this time with a twist. the daily original is an online gallery that sells one artwork per day. They also offer giclee services for the artwork on display to offer a range of options. they are a reasonably new site with a really nice simple design that really shows the work in it’s best light. I like the magnifier script particularly. They specialize in affordable artworks.

my first artwork will be for sale on Thursday the 14th of may – this Thursday!

nudity in art – equivalent to racism, violence and blasphemy?

One of the artists rejected last year for her nude submission to the Tea Tree Gully Council’s exhibition has decided to enter another nude this year, this time of a reclining male.

Margaret Tuckey, whose nude entry was rejected last year, said the show would be a “bland” display of still lifes and landscapes under new guidelines and if they knock back her latest painting of a nude man “they don’t even know what art is”.

The new guidelines, unanimously endorsed last week by the council’s social inclusion committee, will cover entries in the next show, to be held at the Civic Centre in August.

The committee decided the council had a duty of care to protect Civic Centre visitors from any pieces of artwork “depicting images containing perceived violence, racism, sexism, nudity, blasphemy, cultural discrimination and other issues that may be seen to be discriminatory or offensive”.

Artist Margaret Tuckey protests TTG Council censorship of nudes

Now I don’t know about you, but I love that nudity is considered to be equivalent to violence, racism, sexism, blasphemy and cultural discrimination.. they are all so clearly related. if people are seen to be nude, what on earth will become of us then? wont somebody think of the children?

you don’t hate children…do you?

the poll at the bottom of this article quotes that passage word for word. not ‘are nudes in art offensive’ not ‘should artistic nudes be included’ but “Do you agree with the Tea Tree Gully Council’s decision to ban “images containing perceived violence, racism, sexism, nudity, blasphemy, cultural discrimination and other issues” at its annual art show?’ thus putting them all on an equal footing.

I hope the council revisits it’s policies, but I doubt it will. I hope Margaret Tuckey gets her work in this time, but I doubt she will. mostly I hope that the council and the article that I have quoted here will look into their wording and see the suggestiveness and implications present in the wording of this phrase, but I doubt that will happen either. Because this has become a point of bureaucracy. and the reality is that nobody wins when bureaucracy has it’s way.

The camera can represent flesh so superbly that, if I dared, I would never photograph a figure without asking that figure to take its clothes off.
