I love the Borg. I think they are one of the best enemies introduced by Star Trek. they are so..human. they appropriate from everywhere to add to their perfection. they take our distinctiveness and add it to their own. they augment and corrupt rather than create, but everything they do serves to create more drones operating on the hive mind. The borg are captives, taken and converted. their memories shared amongst every other borg and their identity lost. their original species is lost. all that remains is the drone.

In Voyager they introduced Seven of Nine and converted her back. it was a long, slow process involving the stripping away of her borg components and extricating her from the hive mind. in doing so, they turned her from one of the most interesting borg, a princess in training to be a queen, a real tough bitch, into a robotic pin-up. there is fan art everywhere for Seven of Nine. she became a fanboi fantasy and one of the sexiest characters to come out of Star Trek. Everyone paints her as she is better known, corsetted with the small, cute, borg accessories. I wanted to show the original Seven of Nine. I painted her at the cusp of becoming human, as she works with Voyager. I wanted to remove the sexiness and show the indecision, the corruption, the raw human underneath.  I think many fan art pictures of her focus on the sexy and in showing her as a human remove her personality. I wished to show her as a borg and show her humanity in that.

Come see this painting and other Sci-Fi themed works this Friday at ArtBoy Gallery! FanBoy vs ArtBoy: Science Fiction Opens Friday night 6-8 and runs through to the 4th of December. I will be at the opening and I’d love to see you there!

Nude of the Week – Fallen

Fallen 24x36 Oils on Canvas

Fallen

Oils on Canvas
24 x 36 in

$1500

What a whirlwind this last week has been! my conceptual render was accepted by Hardware Gallery for their juried exhibition Flight which opens tomorrow! you can find all the details on their webpage or mine.
this put me in the extremely interesting position of having to paint one of my most ambitious works to date – in less than a week! luckily some hardcore painkillers, lots of tea, quick dry medium and many hours in the studio I proved to myself, yet again, that I do my best work under pressure. I couldn’t have gotten it done without my brilliant husband taking care of Erica – and without her making it so easy! she was a pleasure to take a break with and feed.
everything slotted in perfectly, feeds, drying time, rest time, painting, everything came together to produce this piece. I don’t really remember painting it – I was in the zone the whole time but I am so happy, it’s just how I wanted it to turn out.
Check out the exhibition if you are in Sydney!

10 Ways to beat post exhibition blues

Interlaced - 12x12 Oils on Canvas
Interlaced – 12×12 Oils on Canvas by Jennie Rosenbaum

Something that I never knew when I started exhibiting was that it’s very common to have the post exhibition blues. in fact, almost every artist I have spoken to has had this issue. there is a let down after the huge event. you spend so much time focussing on it all, creating artworks, hanging, publicizing, it becomes a massive high capped off by the opening. then, suddenly, it’s over. and your life can seem.. empty, it can be crippling- my first exhibition had me lost for over a month in a deep depression.

after that first experience I decided that this should be something that can be avoided and I’ve been actively working on it ever since. these are my tips for beating that post-exhibition depression.

  1. Have a new series or body of work you are really excited about and ready to get started on. the sooner you get back into the studio the better. that’s why you became an artist!
  2. On the night of the opening go out to dinner with collectors, friends, family. a nice group of people you can enjoy who are going to give you support, distraction and a great come down after a perfect night.
  3. Don’t drink during the opening. nurse a glass of wine all night or have something else. alcohol is a depressant and you want to be sharp on the night.
  4. Keep a file of “warm fuzzies” – emails, comments, tweets of nice things that people have said about your work. refer to it at need!
  5. Spend 15 minutes in your studio each day, even if it is just looking out the window, sketching, looking at books, old sketchbooks, going over ideas, surround yourself in your art.
  6. Give your studio a spring clean. if you are like me, after an exhibition everything is in chaos. tidying it all up gives you a sense of closure, and a clean studio always beckons for new work!
  7. Try a new medium you’ve been meaning to try. experiment and have some fun!
  8. Tally up all your achievements at the exhibition, no matter how small. the people you gave your cards out to, the new mailing list signups, the good things that were said and done.
  9. Buy yourself a new sketchbook or brush or something, a nice treat to pat yourself on the back. it needn’t be expensive or large, just a celebration.
  10. Don’t focus on all the things you should have done or wish you had done. remember them for next time and move on. start planning the next big thing!

Summer in the City Review

I love Jennie’s art, and am fortunate enough to own some of her smaller pieces, including Heart and Cross (pictured below, hanging on my bedroom wall).

I thought two or her new works were stunning: Composed, where she has been experimenting with using volumetric lighting, and Release – I love the detail and perspective in this work, particularly in the hand and arm.

[From Jennie Rosenbaum at Summer in the City « Polly Morgan]

A quick shout out to friend and collector Polly for an awesome review of my latest exhibition. thanks Polly! it’s great to see some pics of the exhibition too. if anyone else has some feel free to email them to me (as long as I’m not in them! ;) ) the memory card that had some pictures on it has died in a tragic washing machine accident..

Apparently there was a review in The Age as well, I’m trying to track it down. De installation went very well, I had a lovely chat with the director about the exhibition, they are interested in my showing there again so I count this as a very successful show!

Summer in the City Opening Recap

Observation - 12 x 12 Oils on Canvas
Observation – 12 x 12 Oils on Canvas by Jennie Rosenbaum

wow what a fantastic night! thankyou to everyone who attended :) as with the last exhibition I got so caught up that I forgot to take photographs and if I am the one on the other side of the camera I can guarantee I’m not in the pictures! I will track down some photographs from somewhere..

The exhibition was packed. all four floors had a massive variety of art, techniques and media. there were installations, traditional media, tiny sculptures of metal, glass and crochet, photography and every kind of artist as well! the space is so dynamic. very industrial, very cool warehouse style, gritty and real.

my location was perfect, the hanging was very nicely done (thankyou Emily!) and the buzz was electric. there was an energy to the entire opening as every artist brought all their friends, family and collectors. I loved the diversity of the work. there were some real stand out pieces.

I feel bad that I ended up being so tired and weak that I couldn’t really mingle the way that I usually do. there were some lively conversations about my work and I was so exhausted I couldn’t stand to join in! my fault for having an exhibition in my last trimester really. The emphasis of this exhibition was more about projects and methods than about sales, there were not many catalogue sheets to go around and none of the artists were working very hard on making sales. this exhibition was more about making connections and gaining exposure, exploring our new works and how we got to where we are.

the series of paintings I curated showed my ongoing fascination with light and shadow and how I have progressed from the initial works to my CG inspired works and into my new visible light series. in a way it was almost a retrospective and a great chance to show some works which have never been shown in Australia before.

Summer in the City is ongoing until the 16th of January.

Upcoming exhibition – Summer Project Spaces at Guildford Lane Galleries

Composed 10x12 Oils on Canvas
Composed 10×12 Oils on Canvas by Jennie Rosenbaum

I will be exhbiting at Guildford Lane Galleries at the beginning of the year where I will be showing my latest works, and possibly some favorites that fit in with the theme. The exhibition series is Summer Project Spaces, a chance for artists to collect their latest and greatest and show them off. I will be exhibiting in “The Chandelier Gallery” (ooh) on the first floor.

Here are the pertinent dates, more details will be forthcoming later:

Opening Night Thursday 7th January 6pm – 9pm

Exhibition Runs 6-15th of January at Guildford Lane Galleries – 20-24 Guildford Lane, Melbourne 3000 Australia.

I will actually be attending this opening! the only sad thing about exhibiting so often overseas is that I never get a chance to go to my own openings. it may be upstairs but I will get there by hook or by crook.

the sketchbook Library

Drawing Day 5
Extension by Jennie Rosenbaum

I’m currently working on an international project called the sketchbook project. it’s a really nifty idea and I’m pretty excited about it. The concept is that they send out a moleskine notebook to the artist with a theme and a due date. our job is to fill that notebook up with our responses to the theme and send it back. All the notebooks are presented in a roving exhibition throughout the US, then are housed in a permanent collection and library where they are carefully catalogued and anyone can look up works by theme, content or the artist.

I like this for a number of reasons. first, it’s a project with a deadline that I can work on – even if I am lying down. I work best with deadlines. second, it’s always good to stretch my mental muscles and work to a theme, especially one I haven’t worked on before. and third, the scope of this project is huge! the exhibition schedule and permanent collection are very exciting. the final reason is that I love the idea of someone going there in 10 years or so to look at my sketchbook and my processes. I think in our hearts all artists yearn for that.

my theme is over the top. like any good project manager I started off with a mind map and I will be showing how I go from an idea to a sketch to a 3D image to (hopefully) a painting. I have a lot of ideas for the theme which I think may even spawn some new show ideas and series. it’s all about inspiration and the biggest inspiration of all is the thought that maybe one day it might inspire someone else.

Customary nuisance

languish
languish by Jennie Rosenbaum

I thought once I shipped my works to the Italian exhibition all I would have to worry about was the exhibition itself and getting them back again. how foolish am I?

first I de-stretch and package the works. I sent them off Express Courier International which is Australia Post’s best international service. It’s the one I always use for overseas deliveries because it is super fast and super safe. I have never had any problems with them.

the very next day I get a call saying they can’t ship the works because the combined value required an exporters registration number. this involved a trip to customs in the city, a lot of paperwork and resulted in my becoming a licensed exporter – cool!

so that was the end of it – right?

it gets sent to Italy. where it sits. in customs. for 2 weeks. why? who knows? apparently Italian customs is somewhat capricious.

the upshot is that the gallery are being fantastic, they are working hard to get it resolved. Australia Post are being less fantastic. I think the time and language difference is making it Too Hard for them. the exhibition has been postponed until we can get the works out of customs. I feel completely useless. and rather pissed off.

Purity Exhibition Post Mortem

Pivot - 48 x 36 Acrylics, gesso and Pastel on Canvas
Pivot – 48 x 36 Acrylics, Gesso and Pastel on Canvas by Jennie Rosenbaum

This was my first time going solo. previously I have had interactions with other artists and constant to-ing and fro-ing on all of the plans. The control freak in me loved organizing the whole thing, not having to fit in with other artists (usually also control freaks) and being able to have final say. a lot of the things I had percolating in the back of my mind from my other exhibitions definitely played a part and on the whole I thought they went well.

I think this was a very successful show. the newspaper article and the large amount of foot traffic over the week gave me some excellent exposure (and new mailing list signups) and I got very good feedback. sales went well, I won’t say how much I made but I definitely made a substantial profit (hooray for profit!). all the panic and nerves and fear came to nothing, as usual, but I’d be naked without them.

Things I would change for next time; More time! I keep agreeing to these exhibitions with only a few months to spare! that is the main mistake I made in this exhibition and I hope I won’t make it again. because I was so rushed the opening wasn’t as well organized as I would have liked and I didn’t have time to issue a second press release. I also think I should time my press releases and event notices a little better. I think my biggest mistake was time because my biggest problem was stress. creative work doesn’t work to a schedule and I keep forgetting that.

thankyou everyone

Watercolor nudes
Embrace – Watercolors and Pencil on Paper.

Thanks to everyone who came, who helped and who sent me best wishes. I couldn’t have done it without you!

I am very proud of the effort that went into this show and of the final result. the works look unified but each one is still different enough. there were enough paintings. there was enough food. everyone seemed to have a good time, and the article in the leader newspaper definitely brought people in.

I will do a proper post mortem later. but for now I am taking a well earned few days off. then I will get stuck into cleaning the horrific bombsite that is my studio and get it running again.

Invitations

These are the preliminary designs for the invitations – I thought it would be nice to have two different ones along the same theme. I have not yet decided whether to put anything on the backs of them – probably just a short blurb. what do you all think?

Upcoming Solo Show – Purity

Grace 48x36 Acrylic and Gesso on Canvas by Jennie Rosenbaum
Grace 48×36 Acrylic and Gesso on Canvas by Jennie Rosenbaum

I am booked in for my first Solo Show! It’s a short term engagement at a really fantastic location in Box Hill. The gallery has wonderful natural light and a really interesting layout that I think will be perfect for my white Impasto works. The opening will be a bit different, to show off the Gallery at it’s best- a Sunday afternoon tea opening.

The interesting thing is how everything comes full circle. this location (apart from being one I’ve always wanted to show in) is just down the road from where Liam and I had our accident. so it makes sense that my first solo should be so close to where it all began, and with my most hopeful and uplifting works. it will also be close to the 4 year anniversary of when it all happened. we will of course be driving the long way so as not to go through that intersection.

So! this is the first of many, many notices on the subject. the details are:

Box Hill Community Art Center Gallery, 470 Station Street Box Hill VIC 3128

August 3 – 8 2008
Opening August 3rd in the afternoon.

I’m a complete exhibitionist!

Slump - 12 x 12 Oils on Canvas

Slump – 12 x 12 Oils on Canvas by Jennie

while not the most successful opening I’ve had, this certainly was one of the most fun! we sat around and caroled, ate junk food and commiserated about the rain keeping the patrons at bay. This was all followed up by dinner with my best collectors eating hearty and warming food. all in all, good company and good fun!

I’m re-thinking the whole openings on a weeknight deal. it’s common here to have openings on Wednesdays or Fridays. On paper a wednesday opening makes sense – it’s payday, most galleries are close to the CBD and it’s a nice midweek break. the reality seems to be that it is mid week and everyone is too tired.. except for the artists of course who are excited by the prospect of seeing people, taking about art, being charmingly bohemian and of course getting free food and drink. I worry that the wednesday openings just don’t seem to be as popular. I think it is something to consider in the future.

the show is on from now until christmas – I hope you go see it – it’s a wonderful collection of different types works by different artists at a lovely and relaxed gallery.

A new, silken nude

Silken - 12 x 12 Oils on Canvas

Silken – 12 x 12 Oils on Canvas by Jennie

This piece has been painted for the upcoming christmas exhibition at port art gallery. I had to resist the urge to call it dimples! I really am enjoying the smaller pieces, they are fun, more of a fling than a heady engagement. Port art called and asked if I could get my works to them earlier for a separate show which is wonderful as it means further exposure, but unfortunately I won’t have as many as I would like in the shows. ah well. I sold one of the ones that was going to be exhibited so I can’t complain!

between the entries for Gallery Diet and Brian Burkhardt’s Word of Mouth exhibit at Miami Art Basel and my pieces for the christmas shows at Port Art I have been painting like crazy and working insanely on all the business stuff in the meantime. I am thrilled to be working so hard, especially as my painting seems to be better when I push myself to the limits (it’s the exhaustion – it does funny things to my creative centers!) but boy am I tired! luckily I can space out this weekend and next week a bit more – I think i’ll need it! further details on all these shows soon!

Eros

Iris

Iris, by Rodin

Some exhibits are merely allusive to sex but others are highly explicit, possibly shocking some viewers. “Eros is not always sex, but it is in no way pornography,” comments curator Ulf Kuester. Organizers of the show, mounted at the Beyeler Foundation museum at suburban Riehen, say it is the first ever to present such a range of erotica.
On view are paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, videos, films and artistic installations, on loan from museums and private collections in the United States and Europe, as well as from Beyeler’s own stock of imagery.
EROS in Modern Art: Broad Swiss show focuses on sexuality in modern art – iht, europe,A&E Switzerland EROS in Switzerland – Europe – International Herald Tribune:

I would love to see this exhibition, Sexuality and sensuality explored by some of my favorite artists. The Posing of Iris is some of the bet I’ve seen, so dynamic and raw while still maintaining sensuality and Rodin’s masterful organic feel. No Doubt there will be a lot of people who object to this, but for now it’s wonderful to see how attitudes have shifted to allow a show like this to happen.

I’m Nude in New York!

Well, my work is anyway. It’s a very naked depiction of myself, very raw. This is a small scale work I did in response to a show in New York requesting small pieces on paper. It is a self portrait based on an sketch I made during some pain soaked night. I don’t remember making the sketch but it appeared in my book and freaked me out so I decided to expand on it.

This isn’t pretty, it has several meanings, most of which should be pretty obvious. it’s the first self portrait I have done in years and isn’t representational so much as psychological. I did several small scale works for potential inclusion in the NY show but ended up choosing this one. I could have gone with something subtler but I thought, ‘hey, this is New York, It’s my first international show I am going to put in something raw and really personal and striking.’ This could be a good idea or a stupid idea but I would rather stand out with something like this than blend in with a safe nude.

Wot I Learnded II

Spirit - 2 Following on from the last show I thought I would do a ‘wot I learnded’ after each show, because learning is fun ;) This one is a little late but still valid.

  1. Group Shows don’t have to be stressful. This one was great, very relaxed, wonderful people to work with and everything went really well.
  2. Exposure is king. I love a good exposure, having the festival, while damp, still served to highlight work.
  3. The opening is still most important. I think the opening was de-emphasized in favor of the festival, and turnouts were not as large as expected. Talking to people really makes a difference too – it’s hard but being shy won’t help!
  4. Sweat the small stuff. Little features like proper labels and writeups on the artists make such a difference. it isn’t expensive to stick them on foamcore and set it all up well and the immediate look is brilliant.
  5. People really do respond to color accents. and nice details – plus they are fun to do!
  6. Be inspired.
  7. Sorting out the edges as you go is much easier and neater and nicer..
  8. Hats rock.
  9. Take what you learn from past experiences but don’t discount previous ones. During preparation this show I bagged the last one a lot. I think that just brought myself down and made me feel crappy for no reason.
  10. Just because images may offend or disturb doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do them.
  11. Not everything has to be perfect – beauty is often in the imperfections.
  12. Don’t scrub out paintings!! I am incapable of judging my own work. once a painting is on the canvas it isn’t mine anymore – I need to make it live but it won’t always go exactly where it is supposed to – and that is part of the magic. painting is a journey not a destination.
  13. Don’t be afraid to mix it up, try new things and step outside the comfort zone – not every painting needs to be the same and not every exhibition needs to have matching pieces, techniques or styles. Don’t get locked into thinking it has to be a certain way.
  14. Rest rest and more rest - I would have coped better without both celebrations but planning for a collapse afterward really helped – pity it was worse than planned!
  15. Be confident in the works. I am ready to move my career forward, I am feeling very positive. I think my confidence building and goal work over the last few months really helped build my confidence and readiness.
  16. Take time to celebrate! Seeing the works up there, in a hip gallery in such a cool neighborhood made me feel truly like an artist. I was who I wanted to be, where I wanted to be and I could see my career unfolding in front of me.

Brr! High Vibes? more like high Vibrates!

Hv2006 Ok, so that was bad.. but I’m so cold I cant really think! The High Vibes festival was dampened slightly which sucks but there were still quite a few people around. It was very neat, such a cool, free festival with hippies dancing in the street – pure expression everywhere and my work on display for all to see – a pretty cool feeling :) It reminded me how far I am from my corporate career and how happy I am to be back in the world of art and expression and freedom. While watching Jimmy Clinkerfield performing in front of my paintings I kept pondering the painting free. and how I am now, truly free.

It was a very cool feeling indeed.

Opening Post Mortem

100_3329.JPG Last night was so great, the show looked fantastic, it had a great vibe. I think the main difference, for me, was that I felt much more confident in my collection. Seeing my paintings up there, the results of all my work, made me feel so good. I knew I had done my best, each work stood on it’s own, and made a cohesive collection. That confidence in my work, and myself, enabled me to talk to people, and schmooze. From there, the passion for my work just took over really.. It was an awesome night everyone really seemed to like the new series – which is good, because I enjoyed doing them! David Golding has written a wonderful review – Thanks Dave!

I am exhausted now, very sore, but I am looking forward to Sunday.

Don’t forget, if you missed the opening last night there will be the big music festival on Sunday. I will be there at the gallery between 1 and 3 or stop by any time over the next 3 weeks.. it’s all good.

It’s here!

100_3197.JPG I am so excited about tonight, I can’t believe it’s all here, and done and ready! yet, I don’t feel as panicky, or stressed or worried as the last one. I feel good about the work I’ve put in, and the prices, and everything. It feels right somehow.

Today I am going to be disgusting and I am going to have a long and luxurious bath, do my nails and hair and relax and feel really special. I’ve earned it.

Well Hung

100_3322.JPG Well, the hanging is all done, the paperwork is signed and all that remains is for me to chill for the next few days. It’s a good feeling, everything is organized and finished up.

On Saturday, I added hanging hardware and varnished the pieces. on Sunday we all met and arranged the works for hanging. Woud you believe, that after all my stressing – I did too many pieces? I probably could have made it a solo afterall. but oh well! I save more moneys this way. This piece didn’t make the cut. I dropped it to create more space and because it just didn’t fit in with the rest, I love the colors though. I’ve added it for sale at BoundlessGallery.com.

I am so glad that I now have time to relax. I don’t think this will be as physically taxing as the last one because it all feels so organized. I’ve learned so much from the previous show, it’s made a huge difference. Having this one follow so closely on the tails of the last one has really helped cement the learning process.
