Something that I never knew when I started exhibiting was that it’s very common to have the post exhibition blues. in fact, almost every artist I have spoken to has had this issue. there is a let down after the huge event. you spend so much time focussing on it all, creating artworks, hanging, publicizing, it becomes a massive high capped off by the opening. then, suddenly, it’s over. and your life can seem.. empty, it can be crippling- my first exhibition had me lost for over a month in a deep depression.

after that first experience I decided that this should be something that can be avoided and I’ve been actively working on it ever since. these are my tips for beating that post-exhibition depression.

1. Have a new series or body of work you are really excited about and ready to get started on. the sooner you get back into the studio the better. that’s why you became an artist!
2. On the night of the opening go out to dinner with collectors, friends, family. a nice group of people you can enjoy who are going to give you support, distraction and a great come down after a perfect night.
3. Don’t drink during the opening. nurse a glass of wine all night or have something else. alcohol is a depressant and you want to be sharp on the night.
4. Keep a file of “warm fuzzies” – emails, comments, tweets of nice things that people have said about your work. refer to it at need!
5. Spend 15 minutes in your studio each day, even if it is just looking out the window, sketching, looking at books, old sketchbooks, going over ideas, surround yourself in your art.
6. Give your studio a spring clean. if you are like me, after an exhibition everything is in chaos. tidying it all up gives you a sense of closure, and a clean studio always beckons for new work!
7. Try a new medium you’ve been meaning to try. experiment and have some fun!
8. Tally up all your achievements at the exhibition, no matter how small. the people you gave your cards out to, the new mailing list signups, the good things that were said and done.
9. Buy yourself a new sketchbook or brush or something, a nice treat to pat yourself on the back. it needn’t be expensive or large, just a celebration.
10. Don’t focus on all the things you should have done or wish you had done. remember them for next time and move on. start planning the next big thing!

I love Jennie’s art, and am fortunate enough to own some of her smaller pieces, including Heart and Cross (pictured below, hanging on my bedroom wall).

I thought two or her new works were stunning: Composed, where she has been experimenting with using volumetric lighting, and Release – I love the detail and perspective in this work, particularly in the hand and arm.

A quick shout out to friend and collector Polly for an awesome review of my latest exhibition. thanks Polly! it’s great to see some pics of the exhibition too. if anyone else has some feel free to email them to me (as long as I’m not in them! ) the memory card that had some pictures on it has died in a tragic washing machine accident..

Apparently there was a review in The Age as well, I’m trying to track it down. De installation went very well, I had a lovely chat with the director about the exhibition, they are interested in my showing there again so I count this as a very successful show!

wow what a fantastic night! thankyou to everyone who attended as with the last exhibition I got so caught up that I forgot to take photographs and if I am the one on the other side of the camera I can guarantee I’m not in the pictures! I will track down some photographs from somewhere..

The exhibition was packed. all four floors had a massive variety of art, techniques and media. there were installations, traditional media, tiny sculptures of metal, glass and crochet, photography and every kind of artist as well! the space is so dynamic. very industrial, very cool warehouse style, gritty and real.

my location was perfect, the hanging was very nicely done (thankyou Emily!) and the buzz was electric. there was an energy to the entire opening as every artist brought all their friends, family and collectors. I loved the diversity of the work. there were some real stand out pieces.

I feel bad that I ended up being so tired and weak that I couldn’t really mingle the way that I usually do. there were some lively conversations about my work and I was so exhausted I couldn’t stand to join in! my fault for having an exhibition in my last trimester really. The emphasis of this exhibition was more about projects and methods than about sales, there were not many catalogue sheets to go around and none of the artists were working very hard on making sales. this exhibition was more about making connections and gaining exposure, exploring our new works and how we got to where we are.

the series of paintings I curated showed my ongoing fascination with light and shadow and how I have progressed from the initial works to my CG inspired works and into my new visible light series. in a way it was almost a retrospective and a great chance to show some works which have never been shown in Australia before.

Summer in the City is ongoing until the 16th of January.

I will be exhbiting at Guildford Lane Galleries at the beginning of the year where I will be showing my latest works, and possibly some favorites that fit in with the theme. The exhibition series is Summer Project Spaces, a chance for artists to collect their latest and greatest and show them off. I will be exhibiting in “The Chandelier Gallery” (ooh) on the first floor.

I will actually be attending this opening! the only sad thing about exhibiting so often overseas is that I never get a chance to go to my own openings. it may be upstairs but I will get there by hook or by crook.

Extension by Jennie Rosenbaum

I’m currently working on an international project called the sketchbook project. it’s a really nifty idea and I’m pretty excited about it. The concept is that they send out a moleskine notebook to the artist with a theme and a due date. our job is to fill that notebook up with our responses to the theme and send it back. All the notebooks are presented in a roving exhibition throughout the US, then are housed in a permanent collection and library where they are carefully catalogued and anyone can look up works by theme, content or the artist.

I like this for a number of reasons. first, it’s a project with a deadline that I can work on – even if I am lying down. I work best with deadlines. second, it’s always good to stretch my mental muscles and work to a theme, especially one I haven’t worked on before. and third, the scope of this project is huge! the exhibition schedule and permanent collection are very exciting. the final reason is that I love the idea of someone going there in 10 years or so to look at my sketchbook and my processes. I think in our hearts all artists yearn for that.

my theme is over the top. like any good project manager I started off with a mind map and I will be showing how I go from an idea to a sketch to a 3D image to (hopefully) a painting. I have a lot of ideas for the theme which I think may even spawn some new show ideas and series. it’s all about inspiration and the biggest inspiration of all is the thought that maybe one day it might inspire someone else.

I thought once I shipped my works to the Italian exhibition all I would have to worry about was the exhibition itself and getting them back again. how foolish am I?

first I de-stretch and package the works. I sent them off Express Courier International which is Australia Post’s best international service. It’s the one I always use for overseas deliveries because it is super fast and super safe. I have never had any problems with them.

the very next day I get a call saying they can’t ship the works because the combined value required an exporters registration number. this involved a trip to customs in the city, a lot of paperwork and resulted in my becoming a licensed exporter – cool!

so that was the end of it – right?

it gets sent to Italy. where it sits. in customs. for 2 weeks. why? who knows? apparently Italian customs is somewhat capricious.

the upshot is that the gallery are being fantastic, they are working hard to get it resolved. Australia Post are being less fantastic. I think the time and language difference is making it Too Hard for them. the exhibition has been postponed until we can get the works out of customs. I feel completely useless. and rather pissed off.

Pivot – 48 x 36 Acrylics, Gesso and Pastel on Canvas by Jennie Rosenbaum

This was my first time going solo. previously I have had interactions with other artists and constant to-ing and fro-ing on all of the plans. The control freak in me loved organizing the whole thing, not having to fit in with other artists (usually also control freaks) and being able to have final say. a lot of the things I had percolating in the back of my mind from my other exhibitions definitely played a part and on the whole I thought they went well.

I think this was a very successful show. the newspaper article and the large amount of foot traffic over the week gave me some excellent exposure (and new mailing list signups) and I got very good feedback. sales went well, I won’t say how much I made but I definitely made a substantial profit (hooray for profit!). all the panic and nerves and fear came to nothing, as usual, but I’d be naked without them.

Things I would change for next time; More time! I keep agreeing to these exhibitions with only a few months to spare! that is the main mistake I made in this exhibition and I hope I won’t make it again. because I was so rushed the opening wasn’t as well organized as I would have liked and I didn’t have time to issue a second press release. I also think I should time my press releases and event notices a little better. I think my biggest mistake was time because my biggest problem was stress. creative work doesn’t work to a schedule and I keep forgetting that.

I am very proud of the effort that went into this show and of the final result. the works look unified but each one is still different enough. there were enough paintings. there was enough food. everyone seemed to have a good time, and the article in the leader newspaper definitely brought people in.

I will do a proper post mortem later. but for now I am taking a well earned few days off. then I will get stuck into cleaning the horrific bombsite that is my studio and get it running again.

These are the preliminary designs for the invitations – I thought it would be nice to have two different ones along the same theme. I have not yet decided whether to put anything on the backs of them – probably just a short blurb. what do you all think?
