My scheduled post for this didn’t go off last week. The second in my steampunk burlesque series, I learned something doing this piece. I have a newfound respect for still life painters. People forgive flaws in figures, all figures are different and if something is shaped differently then it is nature. But man made objects, like pipes, well. If the curve is slightly off it can ruin the entire piece. The figure was complete in two day’s work. The pipes took over a week. I hate them and I love them and I never want to paint them again!
At least until the next time..
Identity

A recent conversation on Facebook made me think about identity. One of the reasons I love using digital models so much is that i’m working with something that has no identity of her own.
When you look back on my earlier works, and my blindfold pieces, faces are obscured, left out or blank. This is quite intentional each time, but each for different reasons. I now wonder if I am continually exploring the concept of identity in my works. nowadays I work with hints of face, slight expression.. I wonder if something is emerging there.
By taking something lifeless, emotionless, composed of pixels, shaping it, moving it, adding skin then lovingly bringing it to life on the canvas I turn it into a woman. What was it before? When did it become a woman? Who is it? Is it me, you, them?
They say you are every person in your dreams. I’ve even heard it said that artists always paint themselves in everything. I wonder if there is any truth to any of these things?
What do you think?

Why is nudity considered shameful?
@naturistnews: @minxdragon why is female nudity more acceptable than male nudity? Why is nudity considered shameful?
I was asked these questions via twitter, and there was no way I could answer them in 140 characters or less and do them justice, in fact, I don’t think I could satisfactorily answer them in an entire blog post! I will try it in two. The first post is here
Why is nudity considered shameful?
I don’t know, i’ve never understood. I believe we are in a bit of a holdover from Victorian times when tolerance for the naked body reached an all time low. Interestingly, it’s during times like these that porn, the sex industry and erotica sells the most. I think people confuse nudity with sexuality, because they don’t distinguish between scantily clad and nude. Scantily clad is far more titillating than full nudity, because it works on the principle of people wanting what they can’t see and can’t have. Nudity is almost always seen in a sexual context. In advertising, on tv and in movies, in magazines. Most people would find it harder to name a famous nude painting than a porn star or playmate. Nowadays with the amount of porn online and the easy access to it people are more convinced than ever that the naked body is purely about sex. Just like in Victorian times we do almost everything clothed, from working to swimming to even sleeping! The only thing most people disrobe for is sex.
However there is another side to this, as the media and celebrities, fad diets, cellulite and magazine covers are constantly pushed in our faces, we are consistently reminded of how fat we are, how ugly we are, how we need to be perfect as only airbrushing can provide. Body confidence is at an all time low. We feel ashamed being nude, because there is no airbrushing in life! We are afraid people won’t accept us lumps and all. We have forgotten what beautiful imperfect people look like and how wonderful it is to be in our skins and be comfortable. You are 100% yourself when you are nude, that is a daunting but very liberating concept!
Nude of the Week -iPad frenzy
Can’t sleep. Can’t go paint. Here’s an iPad sketch.
It’s 3am i’m going to try again.
I get a bit frenetic when I cant sleep.
Nude of the week -iPad sketch
I love the capabilities of sketchbook pro! This is just a quickie, it’s rough like all my sketches, but I can certainly see huge possibilities for a sketchbook that I can zoom in and out, with an infinite color palette, layers and as many pages as I want! I can see lots of possibilities for this application in my workflow

Century Project nudes under fire again
They are not images any of us are used to seeing: women of all ages naked, even young girls. It’s part of The Century Project by photographer Frank Cordelle, who said its purpose was to show what girls and women are really like spanning a hundred years and also address problems they face, like anorexia and sexual assault. Not everyone thinks that’s what the project does.
“Just because someone says something doesn’t make it true,” said John Foubert. “I couldn’t believe that college campuses would actually pay a man like this to put his pictures up.”
Foubert, a sexual assault prevention researcher who works at Oklahoma State University, started a Facebook page urging people to protest The Century Project. He has said Cordelle’s exhibit borders on pornography.
“They are pictures that you would find certainly in the collections of sex offenders and the like,” said Foubert.
Beyond that, Foubert said he is concerned that rather than educating about sexual assault, it might encourage it.

The Century Project is coming under fire once again. I sometimes wonder why there isn’t some sort of global legal package set up for this project by now. yes this is an art exhibition, yes it has a range of ages. it’s purpose is to educate women in issues that affect women of all ages and types. this project has been celebrated and criticized.
Personally I find it fascinating I have viewed the images available online for the century project and will probably invest in the book. it hasn’t toured here and I doubt it will with Australia’s ridiculous censorship laws but it is a wonderful concept with many levels of meaning that I think people should be exposed to. it’s uncomfortable to see girls so young with eating disorders, abuse sufferers and in pain. it’s difficult to see the issues that women battle throughout their lives. but it is important. and it should not be censored. The reality of this project is it’s strength. it is sensitive, emotive and deeply raw and disturbing but certainly not pornographic.
It is sad that someone like Foubert cannot listen to himself. just because he says this exhibit is pornographic does not make it true.
The year that will be – 2010
I am a little late with this as I have been so busy with the exhibition and appointments last week but here are my thoughts on the new year. I have given up deciding whether a year is going to be good or bad- it just is what it is. usually full of both.
this year a lot is changing. in just over 2 months I will have a newborn baby to take care of. I am anticipating this with both thrills and terror as is completely normal. I can’t wait to meet the little person who has been kicking me so much I have been admitted, finally, to a pain management clinic. this is going to be a long slow process but I am hopeful it will bring a new start and new possibilities to my life. I will have my husband home with me for a while while we adjust to these new and exciting changes to our lives. it’s wonderful to have him here, he’s a constant source of support and strength and I’m glad we will both have the chance to bond with the baby together.
Artistically my goals are simple.
I want to stop judging myself. every time I think that I get an image of the Simpsons ‘stop hitting yourself, stop hitting yourself’ and that is what I am doing every day. my fear of failure and my pre-judging everything is stopping me from being the artist I want to be. I don’t get into the studio because I’m afraid the work won’t be good enough. I don’t apply for things because I fear I’m not good enough. I don’t do enough because of that fear.
I’m a terrible judge of my own work so I am going to stop letting my judgement and my pre-judgement get in the way all the time. I started noticing the pattern and the problem at the end of last year. now that I have identified it I can move on and past it and that is my goal this year.
I will:
- get into the studio and just paint with no fear, without heeding the dark voices in my head or the worry about inspiration. I will just glory in the joy of painting and let others judge.
- stop letting myself fear opportunities. if I want to do it then I deserve to apply. I didn’t think I’d get into this latest exhibition but I did.
- say no to the lesser opportunities that I don’t really want to do. i will focus on what will be best for my career, not on putting extra lines on the CV.
- make use of my facebook page more, send out a newsletter more often and write in this blog more. the new post scheduling capabilities make this a snap so I am going to do it. and stop fearing unknown reprisals!
- try to get to a gallery at least once a month. at least just to look and enjoy other people’s art.
Fertility God’s penis brought to light
They hid the phallus of Priapus. It’s what we call adjustment for modesty, and it’s not uncommon,” said Regina Pinto Moreira, quoted in Tuesday’s edition of the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper.
She suspects the cover-up was made in conservative Catholic Spain in the 18th century.
Ms Moreira, who worked as an master art restorer at the Louvre in Paris for some 30 years, spent eight months alongside two French experts restoring Poussin’s large 1634-1638 painting Hymenaios Disguised As A Woman During An Offering To Priapus.
The 3.71-metre by 1.66-metre artwork depicts Hymenaios, the Greek god of marriage ceremonies, dressed as a woman and dancing with Priapus, who was traditionally depicted with an erect penis.
The painting however once belonged to the Spanish royal family, and Ms Moreira says she thinks this was when the post-production modesty came in.
Censorship is nothing new! but to actually change a masterpiece, well, it pains me to say it but it appears we have made some progress in the last few centuries towards better acceptance of the nude. I am glad to see that the artist’s original vision has come to light finally, it’s about time! by the way, you really have to look to find the offending phallus, it’s actually not that big a deal- you can see it clearly in the detail above but when you look at the full image, well, it does lose it’s importance in the grand scheme of things.
The complete and censored version. the censoring was not particularly well executed, there is a clear shadow that doesn’t quite seem to fit. as always click on the images to enlarge.
Priapus was the ancient greek god of fertility and Hymenaios the god of marriages.
