Delight at Caravaggio discovery

This is quite exciting, although it still amazes me that people can ‘discover’ something in an attic or loft that was long forgotten. the only thing I have ever ‘discovered’ was a random $50 note in a disused jacket. I always wonder, why? don’t these people clean out their proverbial pockets enough?

The recently discovered painting ‘Pilgrimage of Our Lord to Emmaus’ is fascinating in that it is quite similar to ‘Supper at Emmaus’ but has some very interesting and subtle differences.

The New painting is, in my opinion, a superior work. I know, ‘blasphemy!’ you say.. well, I do. The new Jesus (for lack of a better name) is more masculine without losing a rugged charm. the shadows in the background lend a further weight to the figures and the figures themselves appear more natural with a sense of energy and movement that the more famous one lacks.

The ‘older’ piece is more typical of Caravaggio. The Chiaroscuro is more pronounced and the effete Jesus echoes more of his male subjects. usually in a case like this, most people give precedence to the older work but in this case I think that the newer one is well worthy of consideration as a beautiful painting.

on a random note – its nice to know that professional art photographers can still get shine on a work. it makes me feel better.

  1. hopping on over from blogmad…. yeah, this always amazes me too. It wasn’t that long ago that someone discovered a Rembrandt that way too. I wish I had an attic like that!
