Slump

Slump - 12x12 Oils on Canvas
Slump - 12×12 Oils on Canvas by Jennie

I’ve been spending time re-organizing the house for the demolition to start on the unit in behind. we’ve had to clear our garage of everything which has required some serious changes to the layout of the house and some creative organization solutions! I’ve taken the opportunity to re-organize my studio as well and now I don’t seem to want to leave. I have some paintings to get done for a christmas show at Port Art, Some works for a show during Miami art Basel and a commission piece. I find that I am reveling in my studio and thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to get back to painting. deadlines help keep me focused.for some reason I have an issue using my computer.. for the first time in my life I just don’t wanna. I have no interest in any of my usual online pursuits which is very odd for me - it’s funny but I guess you can burn out on just about everything and for me, right now, it’s online stuff. so email responses and blogging are liable to be a little slow right now- I’ll be back to the grind soon though!this piece is one of my new smaller works for the upcoming shows. I am enjoying working smaller again, it makes me think about everything a bit more. as usual it started as something completely different and changed as I worked on it. it’s dark again, I seem to be doing a few dark ones right now.. feel free to let me know what you think!

Updates

I’ve updated my website with all the latest news. The new iWeb has changed the gallery format but I think I like it. I miss lightbox and my htaccess mods but this is very effective. I’d like to hear what you think.

I have some shows coming up over the christmas period so stay tuned!

Changing Seasons

Storm - 12x12 Oils on Canvas copy copy

Storm - 12×12 Oils on Canvas copy copy by Jennie

Changing seasons always screw me around. last fall was appalling and I’m getting knocked around this spring as well. I wouldn’t mind so much but I’ve been working really hard to prepare and increase my strength and I’m still struck down. grr. I have new canvasses and ideas going begging as well.. finishing that piece finally seems to have freed something up inside - almost as if I needed to get it done to move on. well.. I’m ready!!

meanwhile I am meeting with a gallery next week and have some work going in a christmas show soon - more details later.

It’s Best to be Nude in a Group

Draped Nude

Draped Nude by Leek

I have the pleasure of administrating and moderating Redbubble’s first and only (at this stage) nude art group. Groups are a new feature to Redbubble but they have fast become a favorite place to showcase the best artwork across the board. The Artistic Nude is open to all media and already has some astounding artworks on it- it’s a pleasure to see all the new works that get added.

I find myself in a unusual position as someone who now has to decide if a work needs to be censored. I clarified the guidelines and made sure I knew exactly what was permissible and what wasn’t but I find that most people already adhere to a personal set of limitations and don’t feel a need to add extra flesh gratuitously (except for one- but I’m keeping an eye on him!). I am sure, at some point, I will paint some nudes with labia and vulva showing but I don’t feel it is necessary just because I can- it needs to have a point, a reason, like everything in art, gratuity for gratuity’s sake seems meaningless to me.

Finally! the finished Crawl.

Crawl - 36 x 48 Acrylics, Pastels and Gesso on Canvas

Crawl - 36 x 48 Acrylics, Pastels and Gesso on Canvas by Jennie

This piece has taken almost a year to finish. it’s been the most stubborn painting I have ever created and I’ve shed a few tears of frustration over it I don’t mind admitting. I did list it as finished a while back but I was never satisfied that the painting was what it could be. so I stuck with it until the very end. I’m glad I did.

The good news is that I learned a lot while doing it, small things like not working with a rapidly drying impasto in the heat of summer, and that I can make a piece work if I persevere, even if it takes a year!

I also got to experiment with a lot of different media in trying to make this one work, I learned a lot that I will be able to apply to other works. In the end it was the water soluble pastels that worked and I really enjoyed the different effects they could create.

I don’t know if I will ever love it, but I am proud to have finished it and I have learned a lot in the process- that makes it important in my book!

Apparently I’m a DaVinci! Boundless Gallery Changes

Running - 24x24 Acrylic and Gesso on Canvas

Running - 24×24 Acrylic and Gesso on Canvas by Jennie

Boundless Gallery, my main online gallery, has been undergoing changes. From opening up new ways to search for art to adding social media aspects, it’s really pushing ahead in the world of online galleries. One of the biggest of changes is the introduction to plans. now, I hate putting down money up-front for anything. I will debate every expenditure, especially when it comes to my career- I worry about everything, terrified I won’t make it back. but I have sold most of my international works through Boundless and am rated as a “best seller” so it was suggested by Luke at Boundless I join under the DaVinci plan which is a larger upfront fee but involves no commission at all. I have to admit I hadn’t even thought about it until his email, I immediately discounted it as an ‘upfront cost’ and ran away screaming and never did the math (because, like fees, I will run away from math as well)- but the numbers added up and I deliberated before buying my plan at the last possible minute of the launch sales (never one to do anything until I absolutely have to). it’s scary but it may give me the push I’ve been after to get some of my new thoughts down on canvas.

I do recommend Boundless Gallery to artists looking to sell their work, it’s really helped me keep my career turn a profit and collect collectable collectors.
