Last Year’s Achievements

Freedom – 36 x 36 Oils on Canvas by Jennie I am the type of person who ignores achievements and focusses on my failures while still changing the goal posts to ensure I fail more and more. it’s stupid and childish and I can’t seem to break the habit. so here, I am going to…

Masquerade

Masquerade – 10 x 12 Oils on Canvas by Jennie this was an organic piece, one that sort of grew on a bored afternoon. sometimes it’s fun to just relax and see what comes of it. the mask was Liam’s idea and it just grew in the piece with some very bizarre colors at first…

A new, silken nude

Silken – 12 x 12 Oils on Canvas by Jennie This piece has been painted for the upcoming christmas exhibition at port art gallery. I had to resist the urge to call it dimples! I really am enjoying the smaller pieces, they are fun, more of a fling than a heady engagement. Port art called…

Vanity

Vanity 14×10 Oils on Canvas by Jennie I enjoy commission pieces. they give me an opportunity to do something different from the norm. to stretch my creative brain in new directions to come up with something fresh. it can be so easy to stagnate but a commission is a chance to do something out of…

Slump

I’ve been spending time re-organizing the house for the demolition to start on the unit in behind. we’ve had to clear our garage of everything which has required some serious changes to the layout of the house and some creative organization solutions! I’ve taken the opportunity to re-organize my studio as well and now I don’t seem to want to leave.

Finally! the finished Crawl.

This piece has taken almost a year to finish. it’s been the most stubborn painting I have ever created and I’ve shed a few tears of frustration over it I don’t mind admitting. The good news is that I learned a lot while doing it, small things like not working with a rapidly drying impasto in the heat of summer, and that I can make a piece work if I persevere, even if it takes a year!I also got to experiment with a lot of different media in trying to make this one work, I learned a lot that I will be able to apply to other works. In the end it was the water soluble pastels that worked and I really enjoyed the different effects they could create.I don’t know if I will ever love it, but I am proud to have finished it and I have learned a lot in the process- that makes it important in my book!

Weight Obsession

the way weight shifts when you move, how it can betray intention and speak volumes about the person.

In martial arts, dance and gymnastics (to name a few) you can tell an impending movement based on the way a person steps, where they put their weight and their movement frequently depends on the precision of those few subtle things.

…In art, the concept of weight can convey the motion of the figure even when they are frozen in time.
