How to Bring Art to the Unwashed Masses

One of the things I like to focus on is keeping my art accessible for everyone. Art doesn’t need to be obscure, just for artists, it can be something that speaks to everyone.. even good old joe on the corner. So, how do you bring art to the lowest common denominator? This works on the…

Dilemma

I have been thinking about this piece a bit.. I did it a few days ago and it is very interesting, but I don’t know what to do for the colored highlight.. My heart says sunset.. but I don’t have time! this is almost 1 meter squared.. if it was a light suggestion of a…

Crisis Averted

I was worried that I was running out of inspiration.. but crisis averted! now I have even more ideas. I am very excited again. I can see them blossoming in my head. speaking of blossoming, I laid the groundwork for one today with an enormous flower in her hair. I seem to be gong a…

W00T!

The TAC payment seems to be finally sorted out and I awoke to an email from BoundlessGallery.com to tell me that I sold this painting!… good communication and information for everything, I woke up feeling better too. Thanks to all my well wishers, now that everything has been adjusted it is settling down a bit, I am hoping that all my work trying to build up my strength will assist in a speedier recovery.

What is a Nude?

From Flesh to Poetry: “The nude is not the subject of subject of art, but a form of art.” So wrote Kenneth Clark, who distinguished in his great 1956 book “The Nude” between a naked body — that is, one merely caught without clothes on — and a nude, “the most complete example of the transmutation of matter into form.” I just love this quote. It’s a beautiful definition of the nude art form.

Veterans enjoy Nudity

Art’s elders still drawing life from a pad | The Arts | The Australian: DOYENS of Australian art Charles Blackman and Judy Cassab might be a ripe old age – with two OBEs, an AO and two Archibald prizes between them – but they still get a thrill sitting down with sketch pads, pencils and a nude model…. Many people see life drawing as something to do as a student, purely a learning exercise, but it’s great to hear that even the best artists still use and enjoy life drawing. I’d pay to be in on one of those sessions!

Figurative lines

With something like this I will carve the form over and over again, smoothing it back and doing it again. sometimes I will get a section right and be able to leave it, but mostly the interrelations of the lines mean I frequently will need to do the entire figure over. The key frustration of this is that I might have a line that is good, but I will seek more from it and will erase it in the hopes that the next one will be perfect.

Experimenting again

Maybe it’s the cool colors 😉 I like the cross hatching around the face and under the bust on the outside and the way the hair turned out…. Another thing I learned from the group show was that I wasn’t playing around enough I got a little stuck on what I thought I should do rather than going with the flow…. I have a show theme in mind, but mostly it will evolve over time rather than being pushed.

Experimenting

It is so exciting to see the image emerge from nothing but straight lines and the mood change with different color additions. This technique is great for loosening up and relaxing as well as seeing the disparate lines that make up an image…. Layering the colors and lines more, creating more tonal differentiation and more background work, taking it to a more complete work.

Get your Nudity out of my Face

“They would rather have their own time and place to introduce their children to something like nudity.”… Rodin showed us the depredations of time and immortalized the nude as a part of all of us, rather than seeking to attain perfection, he showed us who we were and what we will become…. Nudity is the most natural state of all of us. it is often raw and exposed, it can reveal that we are often naked to the world and display the fragility of the human body.
