Each painting I have completed so far this season has been different, exploring new images, shapes, techniques, and each has been an upward progression in my skill…. Don’t get me wrong, I have some beautiful things in the wings, but I feel that if I’m not pushing the envelope with each new painting then I am betraying something in myself…. But even more than this, I guess I need to remember that I don’t even know what a piece will be like until I am halfway through it.

Observations

This is evidenced by: attacking the back of the canvas to get at the scratchy noises poking a head around the wet paint to see what mommy is doing (getting paint on our cheeks) chewing brush ends trying to attack the moving scratchy thing walking in the shiny stuff and putting little orange and Naples yellow pawprints all over the table. doing most of these at once I hate putting her in the bedroom but it is necessary, she does not seem to learn or realize that she will get bopped with paint brushes (despite the evidence) or hauled out by the scruff and scrubbed on the cheeks and paws with yucky smelling stuff then rinsed ruthlessly…. In other cases she is abnormally bright, she actually worked out the torch trick and went for the hand controlling the torch (and every time since).

Beauty Revisited

A better artist can look at an old woman and see the pretty girl that she used to be. But a great artist —a master —and that is what Auguste Rodin was —can look at an old woman, portray her exactly as she is… and force the viewer to see the pretty girl she used to be…. and more than that, he can make anyone with the sensitivity of an armadillo, or even you, see that this lovely young girl is still alive, not old and ugly at all, but simply prisoned inside her ruined body.

The Nature of Beauty

The woman in it was not much bigger than the first one, her waist was a slight bit thicker and her hips were slightly wider…. The technique was the same on both but where the other was merely a nice picture of a pretty girl, the other one was beauty. Needless to say mom did not get what I meant, blinded by the need in her mind to conform to a certain look (we have argued about this, we both suffer from eating disorders, I am working on mine, she still is in denial) I wondered how many other people felt that way and how many people saw the other as the genuine beauty it was.

Metal Men

Wired News: Mingling With Metal Men BROOKLYN, New York — Francisco “Chico” MacMurtrie may have every geek’s dream job — he tools around in his Brooklyn workshop, making robot sculptures that are displayed around the world. But as is evident from his work and philosophy, blending art and technology isn’t always a walk in the park…. more power to him and his group – what fun!

Housekeeping

It seemed a bit stupid to have my old profession seeing as it appears that it will probably be a long while yet before I am well enough to start looking for work again, let alone get another job (considering that everyone will be afraid of workcover claims)…. we will see in another 6 months or so (it needs to be 18 months after the accident) it also depends on how they assess impairment…. Meanwhile, I have added some links to arty blogs that I am currently reading and some other arty links I am using and enjoying.

Picasso is Coming!

In a coup for Melbourne, more than 150 works by legendary Spanish painter Pablo Picasso will be exhibited at the National Gallery of Victoria next year…. Among the works to travel to the National Gallery are the sculpture Head of a Bull (1942) and the paintings Portrait of Dora Maar (1937), Man with a Straw Hat and An Icecream Cone (1938) and Head and Shoulders of a Woman with a Striped Hat (1939). Mr Bracks said yesterday that the first of the gallery’s Winter Masterpieces series, 2004’s The Impressionists, was Australia’s most successful art exhibition, with more than 380,000 visitors at an average of 3728 a day and had been estimated to have generated $25.7 million for the state’s economy.

Showtunes

Stacy’s Musical Village I found this site looking around for the libretto for “you’re a good man Charlie Brown” and thought it was worth advertising…. it is a happy making thing – and sometimes a maudlin making thing (especially with Les Mis!)… mostly I am listening to Charlie Brown, Les Mis, Jekyll and Hyde, Producers, Avenue Q and lots o Sondheim.

How Vintage!

Wired News: Vintage Video Games Go Highbrow Some people are debating the worth of vintage games for art subjects but i submit that it is an original treatment and one that will resonate well with children and geeks alike. the artworks are good and interesting and vintage toys have been a long standing subject so it makes sense as we move into the future that the theme of toys is updated to reflect “newer” pastimes…. I have been asked when I am painting again, I am cooking up some ideas in my head but currently the pain is too much to work through – I am hopeful for soon though!

Affordable Art Show

I went to the Affordable Art Show with mom yesterday, not only did we have some great conversations on the way and way back where we talked candidly, she was most supportive and I feel better for everything we talked about…. I was highly impressed by a series of concert images (exhibited by Bus) which had an amazing energy, the use of color and the individual tiny portraits that all had character…. But anyway, the wierdest thing of all was that mom and I would look at a piece and she would ask about the techniques involved, the imagery and why she liked a piece.
